The photographic collection at LHHSM includes many portraits of El Monte residents with their automobiles. These proud motorists pose alone, with friends, holding babies in their arms, taking ownership of their identity in a way specific to the car culture of Mexican American Angelenos.
In an upcoming event LHHSM will exhibit a selection of these photographs along with other materials that evoke the feeling of becoming a car owner, being part of a community, and the relationships & memories created and captured in moments behind the wheel (or riding as co-captain, backseat driver, pedestrian admirer...).
La Historia Historical Society Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1998 by residents of the El Monte & South El Monte communities. The museum’s archival collection focuses largely on visual media and has begun capturing individual narratives through oral histories. La Historia Historical Society Museum aims to make lasting contributions to the cultural identity of Mexican American lives in El Monte & South El Monte by preserving the legacy of its communities.
