 Preserving the Barrios

ESTABLISHED 1998
exhibition flier for My First Car: a photo of two women standing in front of a car, smiling.

The photographic collection at LHHSM includes many portraits of El Monte residents with their automobiles.
These proud motorists pose alone, with friends, holding babies in their arms, taking ownership of their identity in a way specific to the car culture of Mexican American Angelenos.

In an upcoming event LHHSM will exhibit a selection of these photographs along with other materials that evoke the feeling of becoming a car owner, being part of a community, and the relationships & memories created and captured in moments behind the wheel (or riding as co-captain, backseat driver, pedestrian admirer...).
